Why Go Green cont...

Materials: When choosing building and finishing materials for the project, your green contractor will encourage you to consider the following:

Is it recyclable? - Can the material be torn down and reused for another project or recycled?

Is it long lasting? - Does the material last longer than the typical materials. (Ideally it should last forever).

Is it made from recycled materials?

Was the manufacturing process environmentally friendly? Was minimum energy used and environmental waste minimized? Were locally available materials used?

Is the packaging recyclable or biodegradable?

Project Waste Generated:  One of the environmental consequences of any building project is waste generated by the construction process. Using materials where the waste is recyclable or biodegradable is helpful, but careful planning and project management can significantly reduce the waste generated.

But why go green from a consumer’s perspective?

Lower energy costs for the home owner. And who knows what the future will bring as far as legislation for taxing high energy users?

Home Value increases with every “green” improvement. This will certainly continue as a trend. In fact, Austin is now requiring homes older that 10 years to be evaluated for energy efficiency when put on the market for sale.

Tax Savings incentives (both federal and local) for energy saving expenditures. More on the way in the future.

We all need to be conscientious citizens of the planet Earth to preserve our resources for future generations. Starting at the grass roots level, if everyone made even a small energy conscious change in how they live, the earth would be greatly impacted in a positive way.
