We had our home completely remodeled by Austin Impressions and can’t recommend them highly enough to any homeowners out there who are looking for an all-in-one design and build team. The completed project exceeded our expectations and the journey to get to the completed project was pretty much worry-free and fun. The team was always pleasant to work with, answered any and all questions promptly, had very high build standards and really challenged us in the design process to create a fantastic vision…and they delivered on that vision. The team met with us in the planning stages for about 3 months working on the design vision and creating price points for all aspects of the project before starting. AI is very sensitive to the budget and we agreed on a budget based on the design vision before we started construction, and the final budget was completely in line with the pre-construction projections…there were no surprises along the way. Their dedication to the project has continued after completion, we had some issues with appliances and Austin Impressions did the legwork to contact the distributors to fix the problem. Again, I can’t recommend AI enough… from design to completion they made the difficult and stressful prospect of a complete gut and rebuild a fun and exciting project.

My husband and I signed on with Austin Impressions in March 2014 to remodel our home. The design phase was approximately six months, and the construction phase was six months. We appreciated the design phase, because at the final completion of the project we knew the right design was selected for us.
The entire teams at Austin Impressions are an awesome group of individuals. I was especially happy to have great designers alongside of us helping us from paint, flooring, back splash, etc. The finish product was just amazing!! My husband and I would highly recommend Austin Impressions.

We had been considering upgrading parts of our house: kitchen and bathrooms for several years or even moving. In 2013 we happened to see in the Sunday paper that there was a remodeler’s showcase that day. We decided to go. It turned out to be a good decision.
We looked at the houses online before making our plans, and picked out the two homes redone by Austin Impressions as our primary destinations. We were very impressed with the transformation of the homes. We met John and his team at the homes, and made the decision that a total update was necessary. Anything less would have been incomplete, and would not have achieved our goals.
We met on a weekly basis during the planning phase, and at the end John came up with a realistic budget. It became obvious a complete overhaul of the pool and yard would be necessary. John brought in Design Ecology, and they were equally professional.
At the completion we have a stunning modern home blending the outside and inside. The entire project was completed very near the budget, and essentially on time. We could not be more pleased.

We are so thankful we chose Austin Impressions to take our inspirations, craft a thoughtful remodel design, be open, creative, and fun during the entire renovation project of our 3/1 into a marvelous, modern 3/2 home that feels so much grander than the 1880 sq feet. We added 300 sq feet onto the home, moved walls, lifted ceilings and even added a laundry room concealed behind a hidden bookcase (think Scooby Doo sliding bookcase – yeah you got the idea). John and Josh were a joy to work with throughout the entire 6 month project.

We have lived in this 1977 built, 3-2 ranch, since 1993 and while we have had some previous interior face-lifting, Lisa and I decided that we wanted to 1) update the interior to a more contemporary, open look and 2) make it more supportive to “aging in place”. Over the course of a couple of years we interviewed different remodel firms and went on several NARI Remodel Home Tours to see various remodelers work and came to believe that AI offered the workmanship and showed the degree of professionalism and attentiveness that we were looking for. John and Josh had a home on the 2011 tour that we saw and were able to tour the remodeled home of another AI client shortly after.
During the initial consults and design phase, John and Josh took ownership of our goals and presented a master suite and kitchen layout that accomplished our goals. They listened to our ideas – we had a lot of them – and at those times when we did not really know what we wanted, AI took the time to explain options, along with the costs and benefits of each, so that we could make informed decisions. While we thoroughly enjoy all of the resultant work, we are particularly thrilled with the design and execution on the master suite, including the way that Josh came up with enlarging the master bath without losing any square footage in the master bedroom.
Given that we were touching so many areas of the house (essentially taking the house down to the
studs), AI came up with solid ideas that made sense given what we were doing overall: such as installing whole house spray foam insulation, relocating the furnace to add space to the very cramped kitchen and raising the 1970’s sunken living room floor.
We had to move out of the house and into an apartment, but either Lisa or I were on site most evenings. As such we were able to see the work as it progressed. We certainly saw that our property was treated with respect, the work space kept as orderly and clean as it could be, and that the sub-contractors were polite and skilled in their trades. When issues arose, AI was able to resolve them in a consultative manner.
Of great benefit is the web-based project management system that John uses. Through it, you can
easily communicate anytime. It also allows for simple uploading of photos of ideas, PDF documents for review, and the posting of detailed invoices.
We can certainly recommend AI for a home remodel or addition project based on our “whole house” remodeling experience, and we plan to call on AI again for any future projects!

Lisa and I are writing to express our satisfaction for an interior remodel recently completed by Austin Impressions in the Crestview area of Austin. From our first meeting to the final completion of work within the designated time frame, we commend John, Josh, Yvonne and Alex for their professional manner, patience, extra attention to details, and overall good work ethics. It’s very refreshing to be able to communicate so well with a contractor and feel trust. They listened to our ideas and suggested great ones, too. It is apparent that they take great pride in their work. They worked well with us to ensure our needs were met. All work crews were polite and reliable. We felt comfortable leaving them alone in our home. Again, thank you for the excellent work you did. It’s more than a remodel. It looks like a new home! We will definitely keep you in mind for future home improvement projects.

We hired Austin Impressions to remodel the ground floor of our two-story, 1978 Northwest Hills home. We lived in half of the house while Austin Impressions remodeled and rebuilt the other half. This, plus the fact that both of us often worked from home meant we saw a lot of John, Josh and Alex and saw the day-to-day management of this project.
They were incredibly professional, organized, honest and consistent in their work. When changes were needed, they were addressed promptly and handled fairly.
They did a great job, taking our home from the 1970’s to today with an eye on the future.
We especially appreciated how they:
* kept the work area and the rest of our home as clean as possible
* communicated clearly and were available to answer questions or concerns
* respected our neighbors
* brought in only quality sub-contractors
* gave us options and only chose quality materials
* looked for ways to make improvements and suggested things we did not foresee
* found cost-saving measures
* took phone calls and responded to emails promptly
Looking back now, we’re so thankful we went with Austin Impressions. We thought we knew what we wanted, and surely we would have improved our house no matter who we went with. But Austin Impressions brought in this fantastic team that came up with purposeful/elegant solutions no one else even considered.
Their attention to detail during the planning and design phase ensured that they understood our priorities. Then, they didn’t stop until they were sure we were satisfied.
Home remodeling is a huge investment and often a gamble on the future worth of your home, so choosing a contractor is a big decision–one you’ll live with for a long time (both during the project and for however many years you stay in the house) and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Austin Impressions.

Austin Impressions was responsible for a major remodeling project which included a completely new kitchen and a reconfiguration of all the house living areas (dining room, living room and den). The project involved leveling a sunken living room, removing walls, moving existing walls, building new walls, new hardwood flooring, new internal doors, a new front door, installation of a new fireplace mantle, and paint all around. The total affected square footage was approximately 1200.
We were very lucky to find Austin Impressions. Austin Impressions had dropped flyers off in our neighborhood in NW Austin and the design and quality of the flyers themselves prompted us to contact them. We met with them, checked several references and began the design process, which ultimately led to their providing a fair and comprehensive bid on the remodeling work itself. A.I. employees and their subcontractors are all top-notch. The quality of work across the board was excellent and they clearly have good working relationships with one another. A.I. took care of numerous issues during the course of the project for which other contractors would likely have required change orders. One of the main ones being considerable extra work and lumber that went into repairing and replacing old termite damaged wood of which we had been unaware. There were several change orders, but none that we believed were not completely justifiable and reasonable.
• The project was completed within a week of the original proposed completion date.
• The work site was kept as clean as possible, even during the destruction phase.
• We repeatedly found that their design ideas were on-target and sensible.
• Project communications were very good and included extensive use of a project web site on which all email communications, invoices and other project documents are maintained.
• A.I. was flexible in meeting with us after regular working hours when necessary.
• A.I. is very fair, honest and ethical. There were a few items that were discussed verbally but never documented and they honored all of them.
• All the A.I. (and subcontractor) staff are very pleasant and personable, especially their main carpenter, Alejandro, who even after a hard day’s work with surprise set-backs keeps a smile on his face and says “no problem”.
• A.I. or a subcontractor worked on our project every day, including some weekends.
• All the obligations to subcontractors have been met by A.I. to the best of our knowledge. We have no concerns about liens being placed on us due to non payment by A.I. to its contractors.
The project could really not have gone any better. It was a stressful time, but A.I. did their best to help us through it by just doing the job for which they signed-up.

Having completed two previous kitchen remodeling projects, we were well aware of the potential contractor pitfalls while tackling these alterations. The strongest sentiment that we can express in regards to our Austin rehab project was the integrity and honesty brought forth by John Gehlken and his staff at Austin Impressions. All the best plans and designs can be laid to ruin if the implementation by the contractor is flawed in any number of ways.
From the very beginning we felt comfortable with John when viewing examples of Austin Impressions previous work, but as our project unfolded the integrity of John and his staff were critically revealed. We were originally committed to remodeling the kitchen in the house we purchased in Austin. However, while working with our designer, we quickly realized that the entire integrated living room, dining room and kitchen needed a coordinated remake. As we managed our many design changes we were able to work closely with Austin Impressions and discuss proposals without feeling threatened by the process. Most important during the evolving project were the web based updates and invoices utilized by John and Austin Impressions. Not only were we able to monitor construction progress, but costs were presented in an understandable and transparent method. This significantly provided a zone of comfort for us during the project.
Of particular note was the quality of the sub contractors employed by Austin Impressions. Since we were new to Austin and not acting as our own contractor, the decisions on subs were a very important function within our contractor evaluation. Repeatedly we found the sub contractors to be cordial, helpful and best of all skillful at their trades. Challenging design projects implemented without major problems. And when the inevitable miscues occurred, Austin Impressions were aggressive in correcting any minor flaws.
For prospective remodeling clients, we can highly recommend John Gehlken and his staff at Austin Impressions.
